I was born and raised by my mother in Washington, D.C. As a kid I stayed to myself, but I had a temper. I had gone through things in my life that affected my decision making as well as my personality. I didn’t trust anybody. My mother didn’t know what to do with me. I was a ticking time bomb. At age 16, my father suggested something he knew would help me channel some of that negative energy. It was boxing. I hit the gym and was naturally good at it. It was like I had the opportunity to finally express myself without being misunderstood. After training for a couple months I was ready to fight, sparing just wasn’t enough for me. I’m an adrenaline junkie, I crave new experiences. I fought 15 amateur fights. I had a few rough fights but for the most part I dominated and decided I needed more of a challenge. At 18 years old I went pro and part of making that decision was that I had a baby on the way. I needed to do what was necessary to support my family. It’s when I went pro that I honestly understood why the people gave me my name, Marcus “Dream Crusher” Bates. I did things to my opponents that made them second guess whether they were good enough, or, if boxing was for them, period. I was often underestimated because when you see me, you see a little D.C. boy, the youngest of five kids, trying to make something out of nothing. I barely had a support system in the beginning. Now, here I am with 8 wins, 7 by way of knock out, and no losses. I’ve built a team that’s constantly growing and we all work together to make sure what I do continues to feed my family and be the one thing in this world that keeps me sane. When I was at my lowest point I had boxing, so I’m doing what I love. I’m doing what I do best and I’m sticking to it. There are no days off. I’m winning
