Rumble at the Rodeway in Allentown Oct. 21st

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

Here we are a few days after the big Mayweather vs Ortiz fight. After just 4 rounds of boxing we saw the more experienced boxer (and most likely the best of all time) stop the young Victor Ortiz.

Now we move forward one month to Allentown, Pa where fighters who are just typical blue collar, hard working boxers are getting ready to go out there and give the fans their money’s worth. They might not be making the millions of dollars or getting all of the publicity that the big name boxers do, but they put their heart and soul into their craft.

On Oct. 21st at the Rodeway Inn,  Allentown’s favorite boxer William Miranda will step back into the ring for a 6 round main event bout to avenge his loss against Lonnie Kornegay of Baltimore, MD who had defeated him and put Miranda on the canvas for the first time in his career. In Miranda, you will see a man that pours his heart out in the ring and you will see a man that does not know how to back up no matter what is in front of him. Most importantly, you will see a man that loves the sport that he represents and loves the fans that come out to support him. He promises to lay it all out for you on Oct. 21st.

Don’t miss this action packed card which will also have other exciting professional bouts on the card including Eric Newell of Bethlehem, PA going up against Antonio Robertson of Alexandria, Virginia in a 4 round Heavyweight bout. Also featured will be Cesar Gonzalez of Reading, Pa in a rematch with Joshua Arocha of Vineland, NJ. Their first bout ended in a draw. We will also have a 4 round bout with Puerto Rico’s Frank Santos De Alba going up against Osahon Omo-Osagie of State College, PA in a lightweight bout.

To make this card even more exciting, we have decided to put four entertaining amateur bouts on as well. The main event of the amateurs will feature two females: Janel Grimes from Allentown, Pa (but now fighting out of Reading) against Katarina Lentini fighting out of the Ishin Ryu Karate Gym in Allentown, Pa and trained by William Miranda. This will be one bout you should not miss, as both girls are “in your face” brawlers and will make for a great action bout.

Also on the card will be the hard hitting 110lb. southpaw Jonathan Morales out of Reading, Pa who sports a record of 3-0 and the very talented Maurice Morales and Quincy Staples. These fighters are certain to bring fans to their feet come Oct. 21st.

Collins Scores Rare KO

By Don Stewart, Reading Eagle

After he rocked Jorge Delgado with a right hand shortly into Saturday night’s main event, Keenan Collins began listening to voices.

“I heard everybody in the crowd saying: ‘Take your time, take your time, don’t rush it, don’t rush it,’ ” Collins said. “That’s why I tried to keep my composure.”

Collins had been waiting more than five years to score a knockout, so what was a couple of more minutes?

The Reading junior middleweight’s patience paid off in the closing seconds of the opening round, when he scored a vicious one-punch knockout of Delgado to wrap up the “Fight for Hope” boxing card at the Sovereign Center.

The 34-year-old Collins (13-5-2, 9 KOs) fired two long jabs, then shot a straight right that sank into Delgado’s jaw. The Allentown underdog crashed onto his back.

Delgado (4-10) somehow beat referee Gary Rosato’s count, but he fell into the ropes as he stood up, convincing Rosato to stop it just as the bell rang to end the round.

“Wow! It’s been a long time since I felt that right hand,” said Collins, who hadn’t scored a knockout since February 2006.

Collins also won for the first time since October 2006, ending a six-fight winless streak. He’s blamed that dark period on personal distractions that he says are now behind him.

“I’ll be in the gym tomorrow,” Collins said. “I’m in shape. I want to fight again right away.”

In a junior lightweight bout, Allentown’s Elliud Torres (5-2-2) held off Pottstown’s Travis Thompson (4-8-1) in an entertaining six-rounder.

Torres, who was 41/2 pounds heavier and had a much longer reach, punished the relentless Thompson from a distance through the first three rounds.

Thompson got inside and pounded Torres’ body to take rounds four and five, but Torres got back on his toes to win the final round with long-armed counters.

In another exciting junior lightweight scrap, Reading’s Cesar Gonzalez was held to a four-round draw in his pro debut by State College’s quick-fisted Oshahon Omo-Osagie.

For the 35-year-old Gonzalez, the debut fulfilled a lifelong ambition. He overcame significant legal issues and two gunshot wounds to finally get his first pro fight.

“It was a beautiful feeling,” Gonzalez said. “I just want to say thank you to everybody that gave me a shot and believed in me and didn’t judge me on my past.

“I’m not stopping. This just shows I can do it.

Kauffman-Holyfield Bout May Happen This Summer

By Don Stewart / Reading Eagle

Reading’s Travis Kauffman could be on a collision course to fight former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield this year.

Kauffman will appear on the undercard of Holyfield’s Jan. 22 comeback bout against Sherman Williams at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.

Kauffman (21-1, 16 KOs) will face Julius Long (15-14, 13 KOs), a 7-1 journeyman with six straight losses, in an eight-round fight.

If Kauffman and Holyfield win, the two could cross paths this summer.

Kauffman promoter Greg Cohen is hoping to match the two in June. Holyfield holds a world-title belt, and Kauffman has a continental belt from the same lightly regarded sanctioning body.

The 48-year-old Holyfield (43-10-2, 28 KOs) is continuing his quixotic bid to regain the title. He scored an eighth-round stoppage of Francois Botha in April for a minor belt.

Though no longer considered a contender, Holyfield would be a significant name for Kauffman, who broke a seven-month layoff Dec. 17 with a four-round disqualification win against veteran Ross Thompson.

The Holyfield-Williams card, including Kauffman-Long, will be available live on pay-per-view.
