Kauffman-Holyfield Bout May Happen This Summer
By Don Stewart / Reading Eagle
Reading’s Travis Kauffman could be on a collision course to fight former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield this year.
Kauffman will appear on the undercard of Holyfield’s Jan. 22 comeback bout against Sherman Williams at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.
Kauffman (21-1, 16 KOs) will face Julius Long (15-14, 13 KOs), a 7-1 journeyman with six straight losses, in an eight-round fight.
If Kauffman and Holyfield win, the two could cross paths this summer.
Kauffman promoter Greg Cohen is hoping to match the two in June. Holyfield holds a world-title belt, and Kauffman has a continental belt from the same lightly regarded sanctioning body.
The 48-year-old Holyfield (43-10-2, 28 KOs) is continuing his quixotic bid to regain the title. He scored an eighth-round stoppage of Francois Botha in April for a minor belt.
Though no longer considered a contender, Holyfield would be a significant name for Kauffman, who broke a seven-month layoff Dec. 17 with a four-round disqualification win against veteran Ross Thompson.
The Holyfield-Williams card, including Kauffman-Long, will be available live on pay-per-view.
