Kauffman’s Back with May 21 Show

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

From the Reading Eagle

By Don Stewart

Frustrated by the turnout for his boxing show at the Sovereign Center last May, Marshall Kauffman said he was done promoting in Reading for a while.

A while turned out to be just one year.

The Reading promoter/trainer is returning to the Sovereign Center May 21 with a 12-bout show that will include seven pro fights.

The show was formally announced at a press gathering held at the Crowne Plaza Reading hotel. The main event will pit heavyweight Travis Kauffman against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.

Marshall Kauffman said he’s been reenergized by some recent additions to his gym, including several promising amateurs.

“Somehow, this sport has a way of continuing to pull you in,” he said. “Even when you’re trying to take a step to the side, it always has a way of trying to pull you back in.”

Kauffman said he’s planning to add prizes and giveaways to this promotion. Tickets are scheduled to go on sale at the Sovereign Center box office March 18.

In the midst of the buildup for the May show, Travis Kauffman (21-1, 16 KOs) is facing another test March 19 in Tunica, Miss. The 25-year-old Exeter grad is scheduled to face southpaw Derek Bryant (20-6-1, 17 KOs) in an untelevised bout.

Travis Kauffman hasn’t fought since December, and he admitted to packing on some unwanted pounds in recent months. But he sounded confident in talking about his two upcoming fights.

“I’m always ready,” he said. “Maybe not always physically, but mentally, I’m always ready. I’ll be all right.”

The May 21 co-feature will pit veteran Reading junior middleweight Keenan Collins (12-5-2) against California’s Quandray Robertson (15-10).

The card will mostly showcase a new crop of Reading fighters, however.

Grayson Blake (1-0), William Miranda (1-2), Cesar Gonzalez (debut), and Travis Thompson (4-7-1) will compete on the pro undercard. Marshall Kauffman is especially excited for the pro debut of hard-punching Williamsport heavyweight Randy Eastman.

There will also be five amateur bouts, which will include Reading’s Quincy Staples, Xavier Melendez, Cole Ruoff, Fabian Valentin, and Steven Valentin.

“You get a new guy in the gym and another new guy in the gym, and you get attached to them, and you say, ‘I’m gonna do a show, and I’m gonna put you on the card.’ ” said Marshall Kauffman.

“That’s what happened. That’s the whole reason behind doing another show.”
